Environmental toxins have become ubiquitous in our daily lives. While we may not realize the immediate harmful effects of these compounds, they constantly tax our body's detoxification systems and interfere with our ability to perform normal physiological functions. In susceptible individuals, this continuous strain can lead to glutathione depletion and ultimately contribute to the development of disease.
Glutathione is one of the most powerful detoxifying compounds in our bodies, and glutathione deficiencies have been linked to chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and even acute cardiovascular events. With this in mind, it is important to ensure that ample glutathione stores are available to the body during times of stress. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) supplementation is one of the best-known and most researched methods for increasing endogenous production and replenishing glutathione storage levels.
NAC is the rate-limiting substrate required to manufacture glutathione and has been widely used in clinical trials to promote optimal health. For example, NAC is classically used to protect the liver in cases of acetaminophen toxicity and is a well-documented and effective mucolytic agent in bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. NAC has been shown to protect blood vessels, improve acne vulgaris, balance hormones in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or unexplained infertility, and help detoxify heavy metals. Collectively, NAC is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent that can be used in a wide variety of disease states.
Other nutrients are needed to synthesize glutathione and support the body's detoxification systems. Glycine, like cysteine, is an amino acid used as a substrate for making glutathione. Glycine has been studied in isolation and in combination with NAC and has been shown to be effective in upregulating glutathione production. Selenium, on the other hand, is a mineral that does not act as a substrate for glutathione but rather helps increase glutathione through the upregulation of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase.
Cyto-Matrix's NAC-Matrix provides 600 mg of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, 70 mg of glycine, and 20 mcg of elemental selenium in a glycinate chelate for optimal absorption.
