Glutamine is the most prevalent amino acid circulating in the bloodstream, acting as a buffer for nitrogen-containing compounds. Although readily available in blood vessels, it is primarily stored in skeletal muscle tissue and released when needed. Glutamine is also one of three amino acids, along with cysteine and glycine, required to create glutathione, with broad implications for detoxification and antioxidant capacity.
Glutamine acts as a primary fuel for many different cells in the body. It is required by fibroblasts and their ability to promote wound healing, enterocytes that line the digestive tract, and macrophages and lymphocytes, which are necessary for good immunity.
Glutamine appears to be most needed during periods of convalescence, as glutamine levels in muscles drop significantly due to significant stress. For example, athletes who overtrain are at greater risk of infectious diseases due to compromised immunity. This compromised immunity is thought to be due to a decrease in glutamine availability to immune cells, and some research has confirmed that glutamine supplementation can reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections in athletes after intense training.
Improved digestive health has been observed with glutamine supplementation under various stressors. Reduced diarrhea and fewer digestive upsets have been reported in supplemented individuals with inflammatory bowel disease, taking antiviral medications, and receiving cancer chemotherapy. These digestive benefits are thought to be due to its role in restoring tight junctions and reducing intestinal permeability.
Finally, glutamine has been shown to significantly increase endurance and exercise capacity in people with stable angina and is also indicated for reducing chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. Collectively, glutamine's ability to protect the body during times of stress is quite evident. Cyto-Glutamine is part of the Cyto-Matrix series of powders, providing 5 grams of pure, stable L-Glutamine per scoop. The individual amino acids in a powder delivery allow for customization, dose specificity, and fast-acting results with your patients.
