Berberine is an active constituent found in a variety of plant species. More recent studies have shown that berberine has biological effects on multiple pathways in the body, indicating that it may be a potential treatment for metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is thought to begin with a buildup of lipids in non-adipose tissue, known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Berberine also has studies supporting its ability to reduce symptoms associated with NAFLD, as well as significant anti-diabetic effects and lipid-lowering ability.
Historically, berberine has been used for its antimicrobial activity, as berberine is active against a wide range of organisms, including bacterial viruses, fungi, helminths, and chlamydia.
